Safe and Humane Transport for Dogs in Europe's Breeding Community
Ensuring welfare during transport is essential, especially for breeders and new owners. European rules under EU Regulation 576/2013 (and related guidance) require that animals are fit for travel, transported in crates appropriate for their size, temperature, and ventilation, and receive food every 24 hours and water every 12 hours [19]. For puppies, many countries prohibit transport before eight weeks of age.
ACCREDITED breeders must maintain detailed records, including origin, health treatments, and care guidance. Under proposed EU legislation, breeders would also have to provide improved housing—space for movement, climate control, and enriched environments [10].
Furthermore, cosmetic procedures like tail docking or ear cropping are banned in FCI member countries unless medically justified, and dogs from such practices are often barred from shows [18].
Overall: transport must respect animal welfare, breeders must document care, and cosmetic manipulations are restricted—this aligns with FCI norms and European legislation.
